Big Brothers Big Sisters Builds Assets in Youth

Big Brothers Big Sisters wishes to expand services in Ohio County. The mission of the agency is to help children become confident, competent individuals through professionally supported one to one relationships with caring adults. “It is all about building developmental assets for youth” Laura Rolf, Community Development Director said.

Youth who have Mentors are more resilient, less likely to use alcohol or drugs or participate in other risk taking behaviors. They are more likely to do well in school and have higher self-confidence.

In order to reach more youth Rolf said “Individuals over age eighteen who want to have fun and make a difference are needed. People can become Big Brothers, Big Sisters, a Couple for Kids or Family for Kids. In addition parents and guardians who would like to add developmental assets can refer their child (age 6 and older) by calling the agency.”
• There is good reason to volunteer… studies say that volunteering is good for your mental and physical health. Meaningful and rewarding volunteer work can add balance and perspective to your life. Meeting people, learning new skills, receiving positive feedback about a job well done does wonders for you and the people you are helping.
The Big Brothers Big Sisters Advisory Board is eager to add representation from Ohio County to help recruit Bigs and Littles, spread the word and help raise needed financial resources to support the program.

The Citizens for a Drug Free Ohio County has supported the program for several years making it possible to continue to serve our local youth.
