Historical Society Hosts Lochry’s Massacre Program

Ohio County has a rich history just like every other county in America.  The different personalities and events make it our own wonderful history.  The first recorded history of white Americans in the territory that would become Ohio County refers to Colonel Archibald Lochry in 1781.  Colonel Lochry was leading a contingent of about 100 soldiers during the Revolutionary War.  He was attempting to connect with General George Rogers Clark when they were attacked.

Gary Eldridge has done extensive research on Colonel Archibald Lochry and his trip down the Ohio River.  The focus of the program will be Colonel Archibald Lochry and his short and unpleasant visit to what became Ohio County in 1781.  Though he surrendered to the confederated Indians under the leadership of Chief Brant, he was killed by renegade Shawnees.  Chief Brant forced marched 64 prisoners to Detroit where they were bought by the British.  Ultimately all prisoners were released by the end of the war in 1783.

The presentation is set for May 30, 2010 at 2 pm.  This Free program, accompanied by a Power Point presentation, will be on who Lochry was, how Lochry came to be killed here, and what happened to the men after they were ambushed.    After the program visit the museum for free.

The Ohio County Historical Museum (212 S. Walnut Street, Rising Sun, Indiana, 47040) is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is located along the Ohio River Scenic By-way.  Museum hours are 11-4 Monday-Saturday, 1:30-4:30 Sunday, and closed Wednesdays.  Admission to the museum only is $2.50 for adults, $2.00 for senior citizens, $1.00 for high school students, and free for members and children 12 and under.
